Mission and Vision

The Fishing School’s (TFS) mission is to provide a safe haven and academic support to underserved youth and their families in Washington, D.C.

The Fishing School’s name was the vision of our founder, Tom Lewis, and comes from the adage, “If you give a man a fish, you will feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will feed himself for a lifetime.” By teaching young people to “fish in the rivers of their minds,” TFS is changing generations.

What We Do

Through afterschool and summer programming, TFS works with elementary and middle school students to increase academic performance, school success, and life skills. Our programs also engage and support parents to further bolster student success.  Each year, TFS serves more than 350 families throughout D.C.

Innovation and What We Know Works

Next school year, TFS will launch a new Cohort Model that will make a multi-year commitment to children from grades 1-8. Our innovative program approach will use evidence-based curricula; hands-on STEAM-based activities; in-person and virtual support to middle school students; and expanded engagement of parents as stakeholders in student success. Student outcomes will be measured longitudinally through high school, using multiple data points and an independent evaluation.
