The Fishing School

Service to Others

The Fishing School (TFS) is a nonprofit serving the Washington, DC communities most in need. Our mission is to prepare elementary and middle school youth for success in high school and life by improving their academic performance and life skills; and engaging them and their parents in intensive, multi-year, and research-based out-of-school time and parental engagement programs and activities.

The philosophy of The Fishing School (TFS) is inspired by the adage, “If you give a man a fish, you will feed him for a day. If you teach him how to fish, he will feed himself for a lifetime.”

TFS has a Life Skills theme dedicated to community service called, “Service to Others.” This theme encourages participants to value service and to identify the needs of groups and communities. Students then brainstorm ways in which they can address the need. Service activities may take place within the school, neighborhoods, homes, or other institutions. The key to this module is that participants identify the feelings that service evokes and discuss their ideas together. Beyond the formalized encouragement of service through the life skills curriculum, we reinforce the demonstration of good citizenship through our written creed, “to honor your community, yourself, and others.”
