Promoting Youth Development

The Fishing School (TFS) promotes youth development by presenting students with opportunities to take charge of their own environment within a safe program structure.  All TFS programs are based on Positive Youth Development (PYD) principles that promote youth voice, choice, and opportunities to ensure smooth transition from youth to responsible adulthood.  Students are provided opportunities to […]

Improving the Quality of Life

The Fishing School’s (TFS) out of school time (OST) and parent programming provide a sound base for the academic and social development of students and families, and improves outcomes in under-served communities in the District. Recent research compiled by Afterschool Alliance credits OST programming with improving communities’ quality of life by: improving engagement in school […]

Violence Prevention

TFS addresses violence prevention through: instructor training, curriculum design, parental engagement, and partnerships, including neighborhood law enforcement. Our Life Skills curriculum, parent engagement, and partnership elements are underpinned by ongoing research-based training, including trauma informed care, toxic stress, awareness of emotional triggers and de-escalation techniques, and training regarding mandatory reporting of abuse and neglect. Advancing Youth […]

Recent Accomplishments

Within the last year, our most significant accomplishment is our highly effective program delivery that promotes positive change in our target communities and continues to generate excellent results. During the 2015-16 school year, 95% of TFS students improved in math, with 66% of students improving by one or more grade levels on their end of […]

A Collaborative Community

TFS’ central program partners are the schools we serve. TFS’ presence throughout DCPS is a result of DCPS’ Central Office vetting process, through which TFS became an approved DCPS partner. Partnerships with each of our schools are formalized through Memorandums of Agreement (MOAs) with school principals. Our partnership enables TFS to access data regarding students’ […]

In addition, TFS received a newly outfitted computer lab, including a Microsoft Surface Hub, a gaming station with virtual reality headsets, and eight new Microsoft Surface Pros! […]

Unique Features of TFS Programs

Few programs of a similar nature in the Washington, DC area generate the strong programmatic outcomes or have the holistic, long-term program model offered by TFS.  TFS was recognized by OSSE as a leader in out-of-school time (OST) programming in DC, as it achieved the best outcomes among OSSE-funded OST programs in 2013 and was […]
